Glaucous Gull (now generally accepted as one!)

This bird was photographed on 23 Jun over the Riverslea pit at Kirkby on Bain. I submitted two photos to Birdguides as "unidentified". It was published on their website asa leucistic Herring Gull but someone else from Birdguides contacted me by e-mail saying that he thought threy were good flight shots of a Glaucous Gull.

My first thought was Leucistic Herring Gull

Thanks Anthony. I now have it on good authority from Ed Mackrill that this is in fact a 4cy Herring Gull and he explained in full detail why it is not a Glaucous Gull. It's good that we have someone with such a depth of knowledge of gulls. Thanks Ed.

some rubbish photos of a 2cy Glaucous from July 3rd in the rare birds album for comparison

Trev I can't see why this isn't a Glaucous Gull

Thanks gpc and John. I hope you are right John because a Glaucous would be a new bird to me though it seems that the jury is still out. I am not really in any position to decide as I am very much a novice when it comes to gulls and as Ed commented they can be difficult to identify!

This morning I asked the people at Birdguides to have another look at the photos and check their identification and I see that, although I haven't had a reply to my e-mail, they have now changed the ID on the photos to "Glaucous Gull" so it seems that this may well be the correct answer to this unusual gull. If so it is likely to be a first for Kirkby on Bain and maybe should be moved to the Rare Birds section of the album.

The terms of the Wildlife and Countryside Act must be observed and licences obtained to photograph Schedule 1 species from the appropriate Statutory Nature Conservation Agency. The Bird Club was formed in 1979, to encourage and further an interest in the bird life, birding and birdwatching of the historic county of Lincolnshire, to collect and publish information on bird movements and bird populations, bird taxonomy, bird status, to encourage conservation of the wildlife of the county of Lincolnshire and to provide sound information on which bird conservation policies can be based.

Joining the Bird Club is a great way to make new birdwatching friends and contacts in Lincolnshire! If you are a "beginner", but keen to become actively involved in birding, you will find that learning about your county's wild birds - how, when and where to see them - is both easier and more enjoyable when undertaken in the company of our local enthusiasts. If you're already an active birdwatcher you can add another dimension to your birding by becoming involved in our varied local activities.
