Had what I think is a lesser stag beetle in my garden this afternoon (see album). Are these scarce in the Lincoln area as I don't recall seeing one before.

I cannot comment on the Lincoln area but here in Louth I have seen quite a few.

Post subject:  Lesser-stag Beetle

Hi Guys,
It is definately a Lesser-stag beetle in Dave's photo, the only confusion species is female Stag beetle and the jaws are slightly smaller, the wing cases are more of a burgundy colour, and the clinching i.d feature is the number of spurs on the middle tibia, the Stag beetle has 3 and Lesser has 1.
The only site i have observed the species at is Chambers Wood, what a monster of a beetle though.

Regards

Steve
