A trip today to Seabird City with my son, Alex, home on Army leave from the Royal Signals.
A surprisingly large number of visitors were there for a Monday, including coach/school parties and the Car Parks were full by 11.30am. Nevertheless, there was plenty of viewing space at the 5 designated platform areas so that we could enjoy the sights and sounds (but not necessarily the smells) of thousands of nesting seabirds.
The regular resident seabirds were, as ever, performing very well and in the usual large numbers. Recent estimates have put them at (approx) :
Guillemots - 60,000 ....but I only needed 1 for a year tick
Razorbills - 15,000 .... ditto
Puffins - 1000 .... ditto
Kittiwakes - 37,000 pairs .... ditto
Gannets - 6,000 pairs
Fulmar - 800 pairs .... ditto
Herring Gull - 500 pairs
As time was passing quite quickly, we decided not to check out the accuracy of the estimates.
We then visited Flamborough Head (North Landing) for futher birding and welcome refreshments. All the above birds were well represented - but in much smaller numbers - with the exception of Gannets.
Regards,
Freddy
