Great day - even with a couple of downpours - on the Norfolk coast, culminating in a spoonbill at Titchwell from the last hide off the path out to the dunes. Ruddy duck (boo hiss?) still on the lagoon to the left of that path, and bearded tits everywhere! Same at Cley - great close up of one right by the hide window, and a family group of 6 elsewhere. Eider drake on the sea at Titchwell, and common, little and sandwich terns at Cley. 63 species during the day, including a sparrowhawk catching a meadow pipit and immediately coming under attack by two black headed gulls, a hobby putting the frighteners on a flock of starlings and 3 marsh harriers suffering continual bombardment by lapwings. Add a shelduck pair with 16 ducklings, and young avocets aplenty, and it's a wonder anyone ever bothers watching telly! We hired a very knowledgeable guide too - an early 60th birthday present from my wife - so thanks to all for a fantastic day. |
