Post subject:  Black-throated Thrush in N Yorks 16/01/10
Myself, Steve Routledge, Dave Wright & Nigel Genn braved the wind and rain to make the trip up to Newholm, N Yorks, to see the Black-throated Thrush. Thankfully the bird was still there & showed very well, giving close views whilst feeding in it's favoured garden and seeing off any Blackbird that dare enter it!

Also seen today:
2 redhead Goosanders were on Hackness Lake (viewed from the road).
4 Nuthatches and 3 Marsh Tits were at the feeding station at Forge Valley.
At Scarborough, a pair of Peregrines showed well next to Marine Drive & 5 Med Gulls (3 adults/2 2nd winters) gave close views right next to the car at Holbeck Car Park.
A Common Buzzard was over the B1249 on the trip back.

Not a bad day considering it never stopped raining throughout our time up there!

Another visit to this great part of the country today resulted in the following being seen:

Newholm:

1st winter female Black-throated Thrush
Marsh Tit

Scarborough:

ad female Peregrine
7 Med. Gulls(5 adult and 2 2nd winter)

Filey Brigg:

12 Purple Sandpiper
1 Great-northern Diver
3 Long-tailed Duck(1m,2f)
70 Common Scoter
27 Eider
1 female Velvet Scoter

thanks for info obtained from this site for forge valley area marsh tits are a premium bird really and although the info board at the feeding station shows both willow and marsh we only saw marsh also seen

3 treecreeper
3 marsh tit

whitby
vaious common sea duck
6 eider
2 r-t-diver
1 g-n-diver
7 purple sands
2 shag
guillomot
com scoter

short eared owl en route to scarborough
2 imm med gulls
kittiwake, nice and early near the castle

and brilliant views earlier of the thrush down to about 10 yds only my 4th time of seeing this species in england :D :D

Hi Terence,as a regular visitor to this excellent part of Yorkshire i have had many fantastic hours of birding,watching Honey Buzzards,Goshawk,Great-grey Shrike etc. and then there is all the brilliant coastline,but it is not just the birds,the scenery takes some beating too.Probably going up there again this weekend to look for Gos etc.

yes beautiful scenery, i saw 3/4 gos and great grey shrike last yr. hope you get a clear bright day and gos should be up there the weather last sun when we got to the watchpoint was pants so good luck, :D :D

Hi Terry,had a great day today visiting firstly Filey Brigg,where we had 2 Great-northern Diver,Velv Scoter,3 Long-tailed Duck and a flock of 16 White-fronted Geese which flew north.Then onto the forest,with 3 Gos,giving the usual fantastic views,with 1 male displaying close enough to see the head markings well,what a cracker!,if only they showed like this in Linc's,it would finally put this thorny issue to bed for everyone.The Great-grey does'nt seem to be still present after the initial sighting before christmas,when there were actually 3 birds in the area,1 at Wykeham,1 at Langdale end and 1 at Fylingdales Moor.
