I've been wanting to visit this place for years but never made it till today. From my house it's 54 miles and the journey took ninety minutes, mostly because of too many villages having a 30 mph limit. Set off from home at 10.45 and arrived 12.15, had my sandwiches and coffee then made enquiries. For the first two hours I found little of interest but as I didn't move from the car that's maybe why. As the tide was coming in I decided to go back and look for a pull-in, I did. Got the scopes set up and looked towards Grimsby and saw 1000+ birds on the mud flats, being late afternoon the sun was blazing down so seeing the birds was a struggle. Also checked the other side of the spit which proved fruitful as well. The following are birds seen during my five hour stay on the spit: Robin, House & Tree Sparrow, Goldfinch, Mallard, Shelduck, Kestrel, GBB & Herring & Common Gulls, Ruff, Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew, Starling, Pink Feet, Cormorant, Rock Pipit, Green & Curlew Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Redshank, Dunlin, Little Egret, Knot, Ringed & Little-ringed Plover, Turnstone, Whimbrel, Golden Plover & Lapwing. Also saw a massive flock in the far distance going south no idea what they were but looked to be in the thousands, this was late afternoon. Also had Red Admiral and Small White. When I was paying my entry fee of £3.00 the guy told me a Turtle Dove had come in but I didn't see it. On my way out he told me the Yellow-browed Warbler was in the church yard, I stopped and asked a guy with a "big bertha" lens if he was watching it and he was hoping it would show but it didn't, but a Sprawk did! Driving home through Hull was slow to say the least! Really enjoyed my day at Spurn even though my back was giving me some gyp, will certainly return sometime. Kind regards John |
