Made the short trip to Hatfield Moor NNR today to see the 1st winter female Lesser Scaup and enjoyed amazingly close views as it came to within a few feet of us at times. This bird may be an escape or just a genuine vagrant that has never encountered people before, all the same it was an appealing little duck and is one of those birds you have to make your own mind up about.Other birds seen on site today, included the following:

227 Pink-footed Geese
1 juv Peregrine
1 Brambling
1 ad. Whooper Swan
44 Mealy Redpoll(At least this number, but couldn't turn any into Arctic's despite claims from other visiting birders).

Regards

Steve,with Dave Wright.

The duck is now thought to be some sort of Lesser Scaup hybrid as Mr C did voice some concerns over it's head shape and bill profile,a learning curve for everyone involved!.
