Just back from a week in Sussex where we got 3 birding trips in. First trip was to the RSPB's Pulborough Brooks, where the highlight birds were a Spotted Flycatcher, Redstart, as well as a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers and a Green Woodpecker also Nightingale. We didn't have time to do their heathland/woodland trail. This is obviously one of the RSPB's bigger reserves and very friendly. So much so the duty manager radioed to the volunteers that Di and I were on site with her Guide Dog and the number of volunteers who came up to check whether we'd found the Spotted Fly and whether we were OK was really nice.
Our next trip out was to Sussex Wildlife Trusts Pagham Harbour LNR. The one thing that really stood out for us was the superior layout and maintainance of our Lincs Wildlife Trust sites. Pagham had little or no signage for routes, so much so that we ended up doing both routes as we missed a path. On the second part we couldn't get to the end as a little cut through a hedge wasn't marked. Also paths were very overgrown. Now to the birds the highlights were a pair of Med Gulls, a whole host of Black Tailed Godwits and Common Tern. On our walk we were thrilled to actually see a Cetti's Warbler and quite a few Linnets. There were also a few Little Egrets and Grey Heron about as well as a Common Sandpiper.
Our final trip was to the Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands site. As well as the whole host of exotic birds in their collection there were a number of UK birds present including Whooper and Bewick Swans, Common Scoter and Eider. Again we had a wonderful sight and song from a Cetti as well as a Hobby flying over.
We did get one unofficial birding session while at Chichester Cathedral we spent half hour looking at their 6 Peregrines, like Lincoln the RSPB had a viewing site set up.
