Having enjoyed watching the 2 drake Smew at Kirkby- on- Bain yesterday, I thought I would visit Rutland Water today (Sat) where up to 31 Smew have been recorded during February (12th). The numbers have been steadily decreasing since, but I still managed to connect with 7 today (morning/early afternoon).........the most recent reports have all been in single figures.

There was just one redhead from Shoveler Hide but 6 Smew (3 drakes and 3 redheads) from Lapwing Hide.....the furthest hide from the Visitor Centre (phew !)

Other highlights included :

4 Bewick's Swans..from the Visitor Centre (long-staying birds)
Plus :
Green Sandpiper
Little Egret
50+ Goldeneye.

A most enjoyable walk around in pleasant weather.

I called in at Kirkby-on-Bain on the way home to Bracebridge Heath in the hope of connecting again with the 2 drake Smew and the White Stork...as per yesterday. (see Lincs Bird Reports).

Had an afternoon off from decorating and followed in the footsteps of Freddie.
The Bewick Swans were still in front of the visitor centre along with a pair of Goosander
I counted six Smew. Two males and four females in the same location.
There were good numbers of Dunlin (65)
Green Sandpiper 1
Curlew 5
Ringed Plover 5
Kingfisher 1
Lots od Gadwall (1000?)
A pair of Avocet were on the reserve but I didn't have time to go and see them
Approximately 20 Little Egret were scattered around the reseve
