Spent 11.15am-3.00pm on Sunday 15 February at the reserve. We parked near the hide at the corner of Northcroft Lane overlooking Mons Pool before walking slowly to the viewing areas on Parish Field. After a snack back at the car we were joined by a birder looking for swans. We told him where we'd seen them earlier on Mons Pool and went with him onto the banks of the River Trent. We gained excellent views of the swans feeding on a field south of Trent Lane. Our sightings for the day were 16 Whooper Swans 2 Bewick Swans 2 Egyptian Geese 1 Little Owl 2 Skylark 6 Blue Tit 6 Robin 4 Blackbird 1 Bullfinch 30 Lapwing 20 Cormorant 20 Teal 10 Shelduck 4 Carrion Crow 40 Black Headed Gulls 8 Grey Heron 4 Coot 4 Mallard 8 Moorhen 2 Redshank 4 Greylag 2 Great Crested Grebe 20 Wigeon 12 Great Tit 2 Dunnock 10 Tufted Duck 3 Little Egret 2 Buzzard 4 Magpie 2 Wood Pigeon 2 Kestrel 2 Long Tailed Tits 2 Gadwall 1 Canada Goose 2 Pheasant 18 Mute Swan - 15 on River Trent 20 Starling 2 Curlew on Collingham side of Northcroft Lane 1 Song Thrush 2 Chaffinch Colin and Joyce Beck |
