Shame you go to Glaslyn valley just south of Portmadoc, there's a pair of Ospreys breeding. A public viewing point, with scopes and staff on hand. A camera is above the nest and the monitor is in one of the portacabins together with an old nest that got blow down.
The birds winter at rutland water.

The area is well protected by local people, police, army and land owners, and the nest is very hard to get near (the hide is 1 mile away) due to rivers and tidal marsh.

Don't Ospreys migrate to Africa in winter?

The birds are ringed and quite alot known about thier movements.
Full details at the Osprey center and I was told this by RSPB warden at the site.

Extract from the RSPB Glaslyn Osprey web site:

Quote:
We are beginning to unravel the mystery of the male osprey. It appears as though it is our regular male after all, despite the absence of the orange ring from his right leg.

Using the camera installed on the nest, we have been able to zoom in on the metal BTO ring around his left leg and read the ID number, confirming his identity after all.

The mystery of what became of the ring still remains though. Perhaps it came off whilst he was fishing - it would receive quite an impact each time he plunges into the water. The ring could have come off anywhere between Wales and west Africa - suffice to say we won't be going looking for it!
