22nd August: Ospreys at the Birdfair :D

The event of the birdwatcher's year, the British Birdwatching Fair took place at Rutland Water last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Osprey Project team had a very busy weekend and it was very good to meet friends old and new - the Ospreys themselves were very visible too!
Mid-day on Saturday, two Ospreys could be easily seen from the showground as they circled lazily above the Lagoons.

Each evening there were Osprey and Wildlife Cruises on the Rutland Belle. On all three cruises, at lease two Ospreys, 03(97) and 08(97), came out fishing near the boat. The undoubted highlight was on the Saturday cruise when 03 dived fast into the water about 200 yards from the boat. Synchronous with the splash, a very large fish leapt forwards out of the water, successfully avoiding the Osprey's talons. That one got away, but a few minutes later, just before the Belle berthed, 03 successfully caught a fish close behind us. Once again, he provided a dramatically timed end to an exciting cruise.

Meanwhile in Manton Bay ... 08(97) and 5N(04) remained firmly in residence. They provided a very reliable and entertaining display for the many visitors who rounded off a busy day at the Birdfair by strolling along to the Lyndon hides. During the afternoon and until 7:00pm each evening, staff and volunteers were on hand with telescopes.

As part of the series of Anglian Water Biodiversity Lectures, there were two well-attended talks about the project, concentrating on the events of 2006.

The display in the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre, with the new interpretation panel about Osprey migration, attreacted a lot of interest Do come and find members of Project Team beside the display. We always look forward to meeting old friends of the project - and to making new ones
