A most enjoyable RSPB LINCOLN Group day-trip to Minsmere on Sunday 20 April, led by Mike Willey. Some 50 members spent 7 hours birding at this superb RSPB Reserve (10.00-5.00pm). The morning was dull and cloudy but at about 1.00pm the weather changed unexpectedly and the afternoon was gloriously sunny and even warm.
We split up into smaller groups on arrival. Our sub group capitalised on the weather and managed to complete the full circuit of the Reserve from the Visitor Centre via the route North Wall- East Hide-Sluice-West Hide-Bittern Hide-Whin Hill-Island Mere Hide-Canopy Hide-Visitor Centre. We logged 76 birds for the day, the highlights of which included the following :
Bittern - excellent extended views of the bird moving slowly along the nearside of a shallow reedbed
Ring Ouzel - male and female showing very well on Whin Hill
Nightingale - 2 in song and giving brief views
Wheatear - male
Stonechat - male/female
Spotted Redshank - 1
Marsh Harrier - 4 incl. cc and male
Bearded Tit - 4
Water Rail -2
Black-tailed Godwit - 50+
Bar-tailed Godwit - 1
Avocet - 100+
Turnstone - 3
Cetti's Warbler - 5
Ruff - 2
Common Tern - 4
Sandwich Tern - 1
Little Egret - 4
Ringed Plover - 6
Barnacle Geese - 25
plus good numbers of Swallows,Sand Martins,Willow Warblers,Sedge Warblers and Chiffchaffs.
The other RSPB LINCOLN sub group sightings added a further 10/15 birds to the day's total list to bring it up to c90.

Regards,

Freddy
