| Post subject: | Norfolk to photogarph Butterflies and Dragonflies |
I spent a day in Norfolk yesterday to try and photograph some of the scarce Butterflies and Dragonflies within the county. I actually made my way Saturday evening stopping at Scarning fen at Dereham on the way to Norwich, this site is the closest to Lincoln for Small Red Damselfly and the only site they are found in Norfolk. It was 7pm when I visited and overcast with dark clouds, not ideal conditions for photography. I saw a few Small Reds but only managed a couple of blurred shots in the less than ideal light, so much for the longest day of the year. Sunday morning I visited Catfield fen in the broadland area of the county, my main target being Swallowtail butterfly. The weather again played its part by being windy, not very good for Swallowtails, I only had one opportunity to photograph this beautiful butterfly and the results weren’t as good as I hoped for, but I should be happy to get a shot at all. I managed a flight shot of a Norfolk Hawker dragonfly (do these creatures ever land) and photos of Black-tailed Skimmer and Four-spotted Chaser. I then headed for Buxton Heath just north of Norwich to catch up with Silver-studded Blue butterfly; these were less of a challenge than the Swallowtail to photograph. On my way home I stopped at Scarning fen again but in near gail force winds no Small Red Damselflies were to be seen, I therefore failed to get any shots worth having of this tiny damselfly. I have uploaded the photos of my excursion to Norfolk on my website; I hope to visit Norfolk again in the near future, hopefully in better conditions for insect photography! |
