Post subject:  Finnish Lapland and Varanger June 2009

Just returned from 9 days Ivalo - Hamningberg ;; photos appearing on my blog at http://pewit.blogspot.com/ the biggest surprise will be featured in an article in the next issue of Birding World (a possible 2nd for the Western Pal so still under wraps watch this space) -- amazing area and great weather on most days albeit 0C and snow showers for 2 days then varying between 3C and 16C over the course of 4 hours ---highlights 7 Pine Grossers, 6 Steller's Eiders including 3 adult drakes, 31 King Eiders, sp White-billed Diver (too far out!) Broad-billed Sands, Little Buntings, Brunn Guillemots down to 3m, Long-tailed Skuas down to 4m, 2 Shorelark nests, all the arctic waders in summer plumage, lots of Red-throated Pipits and Arctic Redpolls, 3 hire cars one lamppost, one brake disk dropping off, 24 hour daylight, 2 Elk, Mountain Hares and seldom a birdwatcher to be seen-- heaven

Soft-plumaged Petrel - not on my list but will now be scanning the seas off the Lincs coast with sharper eyes and greater expectations. Looking foreward to seeing the pics.
