Matt & Russ do Majorca

8th April (8 Birds)
A quick flight from Robin Hood Airport had us soon in Majorca and although we were eager to get some food from the hotel we did manage to see a few birds on the journey to the resort. Kestrel, Mallard, House Sparrow, Collard Dove, Swift, Wood Pigeon, Willow Warbler & Blackbird in the hotel grounds

9th April (55 Birds)
First true day birding.
Down to the “Smelly River” in Porto Pollensa and added Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Common Crossbill, Water Pipit, Moorhen, White Wagtail, Blue-headed Wagtail an escaped Wood Duck & Shag on the sea rocks.
A stop along the beach road to Alcudia added Audioun’s Gull, Serin, Cetti’s Warbler, Stonechat, Nightingale, Sardinian Warbler, Spanish Wagtail, Common Sandpiper, Kentish Plover & Yellow-legged Gull.
We drove to the road leading to the sewage works at S’albufera Marsh and added Hoopoe, Yellow Wagtail, Stone Curlew & Tawny Pipit. At the viewing platform to the sewage works we saw Gull-billed Tern, Whiskered Tern, Garganey, Little Grebe, Black-winged Stilt, Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Shelduck, Shoveller, Gadwall, Marsh Harrier, Coot, Grey Heron, Lapwing, Corn Bunting, House Martin, Sand Martin, Swallow, Little Ringed Plover, Purple Heron, Wood Sandpiper, Woodchat Shrike, Zitting Cisticola, Red-crested Pochard, Pochard, Black-headed Gull, Raven, Starling & Reed Warbler.
An evening walk up the Bouquer Valley added Wren, Linnet & Blackcap.

10th April (11 Birds)
We drove to the Cuber Reservoir in the mountains and added Blue Tit, Great Tit, Booted Eagle, Firecrest, Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Osprey, Chaffinch, Cormorant, Wood Warbler & a possible Black Kite.(now believed to be a Dark phase Booted Eagle after checking photos)

11th April (16 Birds)
A day on the S’albufera Marsh one of the hot spots on the Island added Little Bittern, Night Heron, Marbled Duck, Teal, Common Snipe, Ashy-headed Wagtail, Greenshank, Dunlin, Curlew, Spoonbill, Red-knobbed Coot, Purple Gallinule, Common Tern, Little Stint, Spotted Redshank & Wigeon.

12th April (16 Birds)
A drive to the south of the Island to visit the salt pans and surrounding area added Common Cuckoo, Greater Flamingo, Water Rail ( 2 birds seen mating), Common Redshank, Chiffchaff, Red-legged Partridge, Grey Plover & Avocet.
As we had time we decided to visit Porto Colom on the South East coast and added Pallid Swift, Whinchat, Blue-rock Thrush, Rock Dove, Balearic Shearwater, Cory’s Shearwater, Northern Wheatear & Thekla Lark.

13th April (7 Birds)
A trip up to Formentor and a stop at the Casas Vejas added Common Redstart, Bee-eater, Perigrine Falcon, Crag Martin & Robin.
Up the Bouquer Valley followed with Cirl Bunting & Balearic Warbler seen at the far end.

14th April (8 Birds)
Another visit to the S’albufera Marsh was worth it as it produced a Great Snipe(one of an influx of about 20 birds into Southern Spain that week), Squacco Heron, Great Crested Grebe and a Turtle Dove near to the Sewage works.
The afternoon saw us at “Son Real” a place I have never been to before and well worth a look if you are over in Majorca. Birds added to the list were Wryneck & Common Pheasant. Back at the car park not expecting to see any more birds we found Short-toed Lark and Tree Pipit.

15th April
Up early to get flight home no new birds seen today.

Summary: 121 Species in total.
