In December 2007, I was forwarded a report by Andy Paterson("Where to Watch Birds in Southern and Western Spain") regarding a rather large Winter 07/08 Brambling roost some 4km from Pau (SW France). The French ornithologists who control it reckon that the roost numbered c3.5 million Bramblings (you read right, c3.5 million!).

Freddy

Alastair,
Now that you have edited your post of 18 Feb 08, there is no longer any reference to the area it relates to.(I think it was Lot et Garonne,FRANCE ).
