This morning I saw a male Sparrowhawk being mobbed by four Magpies. A juvenile Green Woodpecker appeared to join in the mobbing and the Sparrowhawk immediately went for it resulting in a few feathers being displaced. The Sparrowhawk tried again and got the Woodpecker to the ground but it managed to get in the air again and fly off. The Magpies continued to mob it so the Sparrowhawk sought refuge in a nearby Oak. It's the first time I've seen Sparrowhawk go for a Green Woodpecker and was particularly surprised that it was a male.
