The benefits to finches and buntings of the Wild Bird Seed Mixtures that some farmers have been sowing were well demonstrated today. Whilst on a 4.5 mile walk taking in the edge of Barnetby village and Barnetby Top we happened upon a flock of about 350 Linnets in a small area beside Barnetby church. Less than a mile away was a mixed group of about 150-200 birds, mainly Tree Sparrows but with good numbers of Yellowhammers, plus a few Corn and Reed Buntings. In both cases the flocks were feeding on small areas that had been planted with Wild Bird Seed Mixtures. It is hoped that the government will continue to reward farmers for such action.

On 5 mile walk from Grasby to North Kelsey Moor today we found
another large mixed finch/bunting flock feeding in one of the Wild Bird Seed
areas of a field. I returned with my telescope and established that the numbers were as follows;

c400 Linnet
c80 Yellowhammer
Less than 20 of each of Reed Bunting & Chaffinch.
Less than 10 of each of Tree Sparrow & Greenfinch
1 Corn Bunting.

This is great reading Roy, I always ponder the fact that a lot of birdwatching is done on or around nature reserves and the like and the greatest threat to birdlife in this country is the general use of our land. A day out in the general countryside is not always the best results for a days birding but is it something we are hiding from?
