I havent been to MSQ for a while and arrived to be shocked by a massive wind turbine near the adjacent fishing lake,One must ask the question,How has that monstrosity been given permission to be put there?,Was the Lincs Wildlife Trust consulted???Im sure I"ve read evidence that these things kill birds,my worst fear is an Osprey being killed by this thing!!!as Ospreys are a annual/regular visitor to the fishing lake and the reserve.
But putting one right next to a Nature reserve is a damm cheek and should never have been allowed to happen,I will write a letter to the local rag,the telegraph and maybe contact the trust also!.

I assume you have seen the one erected in last few months at Carr Dyke. Although it looks to be half the size of those at Bagmoor it takes some getting away from. I can see it driving down Burringham Road towards Willoughby Road and also when driving down my road from the hill.

It's close to the river Trent and M180, not forgetting B Hale and Black Bank ( which also gets Osprey and other raptors etc) .

Just a quick reply for information. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust objected to the turbine, but a number of factors mitigated against our objection. The turbine is over 800 metres away from the SSSI, therefore Natural England would not support an objection, because the size of the turbine (not that big by todays standard) and being a single unit, was not deemed to pose a significant risk to birds on the nature reserve. Also the turbine is to the east of the reserve, therefore prevailing wind takes the noise away. The early morning sun doesn't cause light flicker on the reserve.

North Lincs Council were also consulted as the planning authority. They deemed that the turbine would not constitute a significant visual intrusion to people's enjoyment of the nature reserve (which if you don't like turbines is a moot point!). They also requested the turbine be moved into the middle of the field away from hedges and ditches that might be used by foraging bats.

So whatever we may think about it personally, the turbine was deemd not to present any real threat or significant detriment to birds using the nature reserve. It was pointed out that there are large pylons adjacent to, and electricty cables over the main reserve lake, which represent a far greater risk of bird strike than the turbine. However it will be interesting to track the WeBs counts over the next few years. I believe there is a covenant in the planning permission that if signifcant harm can be proved, the turbine will be switched off.

Thanks for the info,the argument the pylons are there is pretty thin ground to fight from,they do not move round with a massive cutting blade!!,i believe its a bad decision to put such a thing so close to a SSSi site,I believe it will affect birds entering the site and egressing the site.I can see an Osprey getting killed ,are Ospreys used to these things?,(I m not sure)id doubt it..
Im very pleased the trust objected,the Scunthorpe Council has a lot to answer for...ive sent a letter before reading your reply concerning this subject to the Scunthorpe evening telegraph..

Actually seems an odd location for a single turbine. Do we know who owns it and what its purpose is ie powering a local machine or surely not for the grid?

As I don't come on here but a few times a week if that, has anything ever been said about the two dozen turbines on Crowle/Thorne Moor? Which are both nature reserves.

Has anyone heard if the turbines are going to be erected at Bonby Carrs? At least the trains would drown out the sound coming every ten mins or so.
