I went to Donna Nook with Martin Sizer this morning on one of many ringing visits. We have been monitoring the site since the early '90's and this is the first year we have got well into October without seeing never mind catching an autumn Goldcrest. Weather conditions have been very similar in previous years so it seems that there is going to be a huge influx very shortly or something is amiss??

Although I'm on hols at the moment, an Email from Martin reports still no Goldcrests at Donna Nook! Looking at other Obs websites (Portland/Spurn/Landguard etc) they haven't seen any either. This weekends forecast looks ideal so they might arrive at last!

likewise not seen any goldcrests this fall !! not a single bird.i do not think that the numbers decrease is confined to this species alone. where have all the chiffy's been and willow warblers, not heard of any wood warblers either, red back shrike etc, i could go on but i will get depressed about the situation, :(

terry whalin :?

After a couple of visits to the Linc's coast and today to Spurn, there seems to be hardly any Goldcrests on the coast, with us only seeing about ten birds today.Last weekend down the Linc's coast i saw more Firecrest's than Goldcrest's,i think it maybe that we just havn't had those perfect fall conditions for a large number to leave Scandi and get disorientated on our coastline.

Steve.

The problem is there are barely any Inland, either. At my regular ringing sites in Willingham Woods area I've ringed 2 this autumn so far compared with 60 by this time last year!

Between Pondersosa & Pyes Hall today I recorded just one Goldcrest. A visit to Sea View produced none.

Pembrokeshire Birds http://www.pembsbirds.blogspot.com/ are also reporting the lack of Goldcrests and enquired how the east coast is doing with a link to this thread!

Not good for the Goldcrests if both counties are seeing the same trend!

P.S. There is a spy amongst us and its not me! (who is an exile from Pembrokeshire)

certainly a country-wide phenomenon: I've had day max of 15 on Blakeney Point, 12 East Hills, and 12 on Inishmore in Galway. Some friends back from Scillies saw more YBWs than Goldcrests, as have the East Norfolk crew around Sea Palling.

Maybe this w/e?
