Post subject:  geese on the Humber

Some recent posts seem to fail to appreciate the goose situation around the Humber / North Lincs --

Two roosts of Pink-feet at present hold 3600 Pinks-- the bulk 2500 fly west just after first light over Whitton Sand and up the Ouse into Yorkshire returning at any time during the day presumably when disturbed from wherever they are feeding, clearly at least 10 miles away; the birds roosting on Read's Island are mainly using the north Wolds at present but also flight down the Ancholme and west to Winterton -- the areas used depend on food availability; all the birds were watched out and back today and checked on the ground but no Snow Goose was seen although the same flock that supposedly held the bird was roosting on Whitton where there are currently two white geese and the usual leucistic Pink -- also in the same area are a mobile flock of up to 1100 Greylags; these birds move inland as far as Messingham and even Hatfield Moors but of late have been mainly feeding to the north of the Humber in Yorkshire; also on Whitton there was anew record total of 634 Barnacle Geese in mid September plus the long lived white headed bird and two families of hybrid Greylag / Barnacle one with 8 young and one with 2 young; Canada Geese by comparison have declined from the 800 recorded in the 1990's to <200 birds at present and they are not usually present on the Humber in any numbers - and of course the adult male Ross's Goose first seen in 2007 still accompanies the Greylags being paired to a female Greylag
There was no evidence of any movements through the area today just local movements by the local flocks.

A Buff-breasted Sand at Winteringham disappeared 60 seconds before I arrived with thanks to the tractor driver I followed for 2 miles --it may be somewhere on the Humber!
