RARE & SCARCE BIRDS - 2009

Roy's 2009 film of ‘Rare & Scarce Birds’ is now available on DVD.

A significant change for this version - it includes a narration. I hope that this will meet with the approval of the majority!

Featured birds include the following:

In Lincolnshire I was delighted to film the boat trip on the ‘Boston Belle’ for the King Eider that spent many weeks in and around the Wash, this being the first county record. A Terek Sandpiper at Gibraltar Point was another sought-after species with the only previous Lincs. record being seen by very few people. Collared Pratincole at Frampton was another that many needed for their Lincolnshire list, as was the Whiskered Tern at Fiskerton Fen.
A Glossy Ibis at Wragholme showed exceptionally well in a farmyard - after narrowly avoiding being a road casualty! Alpine Swift at Barton in May was the first for this area and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper again visited Alkborough Flats, this time in the spring.
Other nice birds filmed in Lincolnshire during the year include two Great Northern Divers, two Pectoral Sandpipers, two Red-necked Phalaropes – one was the very obliging individual that graced Barton late in the autumn. Ring-necked Duck at Kirkby-on-Bain and Shore Larks at Theddlethorpe,

In neighbouring Yorkshire, amongst the featured species are Red-flanked Bluetail, King Eider, Short-toed Lark, Marsh Warbler, Collared Pratincole and Woodchat Shrike.

Nationally, footage is included of some outstanding rarities – Eastern Crowned Warbler in Durham, Glaucous-winged Gull at Cowpen Bewley, Brown Shrike in Surrey and the most unusual sight of 7 Glossy Ibis together in Cambridgeshire.
Other notable inclusions are Great Spotted Cuckoo, Black-winged Pratincole, Caspian Tern, Hoopoe, Black-bellied Dipper, Ortolan Bunting and Woodchat Shrike – all in Norfolk. Snowy Owl and Ring-billed Gull in Cornwall, Siberian Stonechat in Notts., Long-billed Dowitcher and Minke Whale on the Scillies.

More than 65 sightings are featured in the 212 minutes of running time.

Once again, I have held the price of the two-disc DVD set at £15.75 including post & packing, or £15.00 excluding P&P.

Apologies to those that usually get their DVD from the shop at the Far Ings Visitor Centre but the centre has been closed for a few weeks and is not expected to be open again until sometime next week.
