How they conquer the Conker!
Yes they have started to raid a village Horse Chestnut Tree again this autumn. They systematically break off the stem holding the nut and then fly away with it in their beaks. Is it the shiny dark brown nut or are they partial to the green spiny case? The Crow is a bird that feeds normally on the ground in the open but they are known to smash Walnuts and other hard-shelled articles of food by dropping them from a height so this particular practice should not come as a complete surprise.
