Does anyone know why crows would steal golf balls from Louth Golf Course - especially in the autumn? Do they mistake them for eggs or nuts? And why is it most noticeable in the autumn? has anyone witnessed this behaviour elsewhere or able to offer an explanation?

This seems to be a widespread problem - see link

I assume they must think they're eggs and therefore food.

On a similar note, I had all the bulbs of an 80 outdoor Christmas light set snipped off in my garden a few years ago. After thinking someone was playing a prank, I then found one buried in the garden. I hung it back up again on its own, and within 30 minutes a Grey Squirrel bit through the wire and carried it off again..............I just hope they got hungry in the winter!

Hi John,
Before I took up golf I used to go on LWT work parties in the '80's and found a number of golf balls on Linwood Warren adjacent to Market Rasen Golf Club but too far away to have been hit with a club. I mentioned this to one of the members who told me he had actually seen a crow pick up a ball off the fairway and fly away with it! Now I am playing a lot of golf I'm hoping to train a crow to pick my ball up out of the rough and put it on the fairway!!

Stuart if you can train a crow, then will every hole score be a birdie ???? John.
