Roy writes.... **************************** 2012 DVD of ‘Rare & Scarce Birds’ on video I am very pleased to announce that my 2012 edition of the DVD is now available. Once again, Lincolnshire attracted some excellent birds throughout the year including the Thayer's Gull at Elsham & Bufflehead at Covenham - both first records for the county, and a King Eider was a surprising rarity for Gibraltar Point. Long-billed Dowitcher, Lesser Yellowlegs and Temminck's Stint all visited Alkborough and the drake 'Ferruginous' Duck returned to Far Ings. A delightfully confiding Red-necked Phalarope graced a cow field at West Ashby, with another, plus a White-rumped Sandpiper, at RSPB Frampton. A Buff-breasted Sandpiper spent a day at Saltfleet, with a White Stork plus a Ring-necked Duck visiting Kirkby Pits. Great White Egret and Marsh Warbler were recorded at Scotterthorpe & Cleethorpes respectively and a Hoopoe was at Winthorpe Lesser rarities include Great Skuas at both Kirkby Pits and RSPB Frampton, Pectoral Sandpipers at Toft Newton and Gibraltar Point and Great Grey Shrikes at both Wroot and Alkborough. Neighbouring Yorkshire picked up a Pallid Harrier near Sheffield plus the splendid Roller at Aldborough. A delightful Northern Long-tailed Tit at Luddenden had lots of admirers and the long-staying Desert Wheatear at RSPB Bempton Cliffs was still present into February. An American Golden Plover frequented Edderthorpe Flash, with Bluethroat at Spurn and a Cattle Egret at Tophill Low also recorded. Additionally captured on video are some superb birds from outside the featured region - Common Yellowthroat in Gwent, Western Orphean Warbler at Hartlepool, Cream-coloured Courser at Hereford, plus both Spanish Sparrow and Slate-coloured Junco in Hampshire. Footage is also included of two Short-billed Dowitchers - the second and third British records from Lodmoor and Tresco respectively, plus Stilt Sandpiper in Northumberland, Red-flanked Bluetail and Baird's Sandpiper in Norfolk, Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll in Suffolk along with the stunning Sunderland Bee-eater. The Scilly Isles summary includes Solitary Sandpiper as well as Blackpoll Warbler and Syke's Warbler. 65 sightings are featured in the 140 minutes of running time, which includes narration. Once again, I have held the price of the two-disc DVD set at £15.75 including post & packing.
