While doing a Breeding Bird Survey at the week-end at Laughton in South Lincs, I was pleasantly surprised to find 16 Whitethroats, the highest total in 17 years. Willow Warblers also seem to be up in numbers this year but I've yet to see/hear a Lesser Whitethroat which are normally quite widespread hereabouts.
Has anyone else got any early comments about returning Summer migrants? Good news as well as bad please!

My first singing lesser whitethroat at Woodhall was on 27 April. I did my BBS survey at Ruskington this morning and heard three singing, one of which I saw with a female.

Around Woodhall my impression is that warblers are back in reasonable numbers, with blackcaps especially abundant. No nightingale, though, at the site where one has sung the last two years and I have yet to hear or see a garden warbler.

Regards,

John
