Post subject:  Late breeding of Little Grebes?

I was interested to discover three tiny Little Grebe chicks bobbing around on the water this morning.
They had just left the nest and the parents were keeping them close to the reeds.
I am aware that Little Grebes may have two or three broods and sometimes breed in September but cannot recall having seen small chicks this late in the year before.
Comments welcome.

Hi Roy

Can only speak for Whisby NR but second broods of Little Grebes during late July and into early August are pretty much an annual occurrence here.

The cold spring which appeared to put nesting activity back by around two weeks may also be a factor with some of these late broods as well.

Cheers

Grahame
