in the last week I have walked about 35 miles and spent 4 days looking for crossbills in Lincs conifer woodlands thus far without any success but there will never be a better winter to find some 2 barred Crossbills so if everyone gets out and has a look in all those neglected conifer plantations where there are larch trees we might stand a chance; forget following the dictates of the information services and waiting for someone else lets do some bird finding! |

I had a look in Rowland Plantation (mainly Scot's pine but with some larch) but not even a suspicion of a crossbill, and I didn't see any cones that could have been crossbill-tweaked. Is larch essential? I believe some of the two-bars this year - e.g. those at Hemsted Forest, Kent, where there are 3 species (or possibly one, or 33, depending on your taste) - are feeding mainly in pine. Andrew |

Thanks Graham... should I get a chance then I'll start around Grantham and slowly expand the search radius north and east! |
