LEAF (Linking Environment with Agriculture) have organised a national count on their affiliated farms between 1st - 7th. February. The sole stipulation is that only the maximum number of birds seen at the same time in a 30 minute period are to be recorded. I did the survey this morning at Stainton le Vale in a variety of habitats within a 2 mile radius of TF175944 and was pleasantly surprised by the number and diversity of species: Blackbird 4, Blue Tit 4, Buzzard 1, Carrion Crow 2, Chaffinch 18, Coal Tit 2, Collared Dove 5, Common Gull 102, Coot 4, Dunnock 1, Fieldfare 110, Goldfinch 14, Great Tit 1, Greenfinch 30, Greylag Goose 6, Grey Partridge 7, House Sparrow 12, Jackdaw 24, Kestrel 1, Lapwing 74, Little Grebe 2, Magpie 3, Mallard 2, Mistle Thrush 5, Pheasant 7, Red-legged Partridge 9, Robin 1, Rook 12, Skylark 2, Starling 35, Stock Dove 2, Tree Sparrow 30, Tufted Duck 3, Woodpigeon 62 and Wren 1. 35 Species. |

This sounds like a worthy project Stuart. How do you find which are the affiliated farms and how to enter the data etc? John |

John, Sutton Settled Estates based at Stainton le Vale have been a LEAF for some 10 years. I went to their first Open Day and have been monitoring their Barn Owl boxes under my Schedule 1 Licence ever since. The Estate Manager asked me to conduct the Survey and the details you requested can be found at www.leafuk.org. I would be obliged if you respond to my recent PM by the same medium. Stuart |

I don't think this is restricted to LEAF farms. As I understood it, it is a survey organised by the Game Conservancy (now GWCT) - see http://www.gwct.org.uk/farming/big-farmland-bird-count/. It was mentioned on the radio a few days back, when it was implied that the survey should cover only 5 acres. This is suggested in the instructions as a sensible area to watch but doesn't seem to be a requirement. As Stuart says it is just 30 minutes. Andrew |
