Ah, bliss - corker of a Dusk Chorus outside here! Song Thrush belting out its melodies with gusto. Accompanied by Blackbirds, Dunnocks and the occasional Chaffinch and Song Thrush-mimicking Starlings! Revealed something I'd not known of before - the Song Thrush (which, as I type, is still rocking the airwaves; it's been in full song for just over an hour) called, and a pair of Mistle Thrushes replied to it! Is this a usual occurrence? Have Mistle/Song Thrush hybrids ever happened? Darkness will soon silence the recital......... for now........... |

I believe there have been attempts to cross-breed mistle and song thrushes in aviculture, but without results. What would the song of such a hybrid sound like? Finches used to be regularly cross-bred by bird fanciers in times gone by, but softbills were always more of a challenge. Having said that, was there not a time in the early 1980s (in Barton, I think) when a wild hybrid swallow/house martin was trapped during ringing project? I seem to recall publicity, including photographs, in the Scunthorpe Telegraph. There was perhaps a detailed report in a back edition of the Lincolnshire Bird Report. |
