Hi all

I'm hoping to track down old (pre 1980) records from Marston (fomerly Grantham) STW and was was wondering whether anyone knew if any of the birders who patched the site during its 'Golden Years' - 1950s-1970s are still around?

Season's Greetings

Alex

This quest is still on.... does anyone here know if W. M. Peet, C. Pask, F. Stewart, D. West & W.F. Curtis are still with us? Or even if family members might still have old notebooks with records from Marston (then Grantham) Sewage Farm?

cheers

Alex

Hi Alex

Sadly, W M Peet is no longer with us. I think he pioneered the technique of flaig netting swifts at this site.

I am sure Frank Stewart is still about and lives down Brant Road, Lincoln.
I will try to contact him.

Thanks all, I'm working on a publication on the birds of Marston, the Lincs Bird reports 1955-1972 have lots of interesting records, but there is no substitute for getting a feel of what the site was like then and understanding the status of commoner species than actually speaking to some of the folk who patched it at the time (and saw WWBTerns, stilt, R.N. Phals etc). Any help tracking people down gratefully appreciated.

cheers

Alex

Hi Alex,

I haven't seen Frank for many years and do not know his number but I spoke to Pete Haywood, who also used to go to Marston in the 60's, he said he would contact Frank and get back to me. I will chase him up.

Hi Andy

Thanks, speaking to Pete would be great too! One can get quite a good feel for the status of rare birds at the time from the reports but 'common' species are hardly represented at all, will pm you...

cheers

Alex
