As a relative newcomer to the LBC website, I am delighted to see reports of unusual birds in the county - especially when the sightings are at locations within easy travelling distance.

However, I have noticed that messages revealing that rarities have left the scene are few and far between.

It's a big disappointment to make what turns out to be a wasted journey.

Out of courtesy to fellow-birders, please could I request that those who post messages might consider releasing the bad news as well as the good - along the lines of: "no sign of the black-necked grebe at Humberston at 10am today" or "the Terek sandpiper seems to have left Covenham Reservoir"?

It could save a lot of unnecessary trips.

Or you could use Bird Guides which has a free (limited) service for up to date info

Which told me that the Terek was still present at 10:30 on Wednesday when in fact it had not been seen since 08:45.

That's not the fault of the bird info services - the blame lies with people who mistake Greenshanks and Redshanks for Tereks

Thanks, JC, for the tip re Bird Guides, but I prefer to be faithful/loyal to the LBC site because the info (when it is posted) is likely to be more authoritative.

There are familar names than can be trusted as reliable.

As Andy Sims indicated, to receive duff info is worse than no info at all.
