Anybody using opticron scopes. Practical experiences welcome. I'm asking because I can't afford $1000 plus and looking for alternatives. Cheers jon

Perhaps there would be more replies if this site was open to non-members of the LBC.

Someone has obviously gone to a lot of trouble to set up the format, so it's unfortunate
that only members can respond.

I'd be interested to learn more about Opticron products - they're certainly being vigorous in their marketing initatives.

I believe (though I stand to be corrected) their binoculars/ scopes are now on sale in the Discovery Centre on Cleethorpes foreshore.

Hi, i've had an opticron hr80 for about 14 years and its been a great friend on many journeys in the uk and abroad. Good clear image through the 80mm lens especially with 38x eyepiece for seawatching. it's a bit heavy though.
However they have changed most of the lines since then and i guess improved them.
In my opinion Opticron has always been the company to produce scopes (and bins) for the birder, not the person who can (or want) to pay 1000+ for one.

If you can wait a couple of months, then go to birdfair, there will be no better place to compare scopes of all the manufacturers.

If you're paying a few hundred pounds for one, it will be worth getting it right.

I had a ED 60 (I think) until recently and used a 20/60 zoom lens on it. Perhaps I was unlucky with then lens as after a a year it came apart. The eyepiece screwed onto the main body of the lens by just two threads. The thread was very fine and couldn't get it go back together and hold. It had to go back to Opticron and luckily was just still in warranty. A few years later it unscrewed itself again and I got it back together (just) and held it in place with electricians insulating tape. The scope was fine and pretty robust except for the thread problem on the lens.
I found the lens mediocre for divi-scoping too
