Whilst ringing near Stenigot today (See Ringing Section) we caught 12 Corn Buntings which is the most the Mid-Lincs RG have caught in one session. It gave us the opportunity to have a good look at the 7 females and 5 males caught. Although they can't be sexed on plumage, the males are considerably larger than the females. The wing length (carpal joint to tip of the longest primary) is about 10% longer in males and they weigh roughly 10 grams more - this obviously fluctuates due to food ingestion and time of day - the males feel much bigger in the hand. Finally there was a flock of 30 about Corn Buntings around the site.
