I have noticed an increase in Nuthatches in the Market Rasen area and today I ringed a female in a garden near Osgodby - the first recorded there. A few weeks ago Martin Sizer caught another female near Louth which was already ringed. The Bird Atlas says that the adults are sedentary but post juvenile dispersal accounts for any significant movement. It is not possible to age them after they have completed their post juvenile moult so we do not know the exact age of either bird. We have not yet received the ringing details of the Muckton bird and I am not aware of any other ringers in the north of the county who have ringed Nuthatches. When the details arrive it may well shed some light on just how far the juveniles disperse. |

Peter Childs and i have found territorial nuthatches in 10 wold woodlands some only a few acres in size, they seem to have colonised almost all available habitats over recent years. regards John |

For some reason Nuthatch has got scarce around Louth again this last couple of years compared to the previous few years. I've seen no evidence of breeding and very few calling birds. I've had only 5 records out of 67 complete lists for the Louth area on birdtrack. Anybody else noticed any difference? |
