Hello, I am a documentary photographer currently working on a project about one of the events depicted in Rachel Carson’s book ‘Silent Spring’ (1962), relating to the use of the pesticide DDT on wildlife in the early 1960s in Tumby, Lincolnshire. I have noticed the book has been mentioned a few times on the forum so I hoped someone might be able to help me with the specifics of what occurred. Carson’s book states that “In the spring of 1960 at Tumby in Lincolnshire heavy losses of birds were reported. “ and “then came the spring of 1961, when tens of thousands of birds were found littering the countryside, dead or dying in agony.” I am struggling to find very specific references as to where this happened and exactly what the scale was like. I am hoping to travel up to the Tumby area from London in the next few weeks and I would be very grateful if someone could shed light on this, if they know of anyone who was living in Tumby at this time or has any knowledge of the event.

Thanks in advance for any information. Selina Ozanne
