Post subject:  Lots of dead garden birds: request for info

I have received an email from the LWT, sent in by one of their members on 28th June.

I just wanted to report that we have over the past few weeks noted an abnormal number of birds dead in our garden (a variety of species - chaffinches, green finches, gold finches and sparrows). They are away from the house, so have not flown into windows. They are not damaged in any way that would suggest cats having caught them. They are not young that are directly under nesting sites….

We clean our bird feeders very regularly so are sure that this is not where the problem is originating - have there been any other reports in our area (Sturton by Stow - LN1 2FE)? - I am wondering if a local farmer may be using something on crops that is affecting the birds.

If anyone can help, post on the forum and I'll pass on the info.

Rob

Hi Rob,
Trichomonosis affects mainly finches and flares up now and again despite hygienic feeders though I have not seen Tree Sparrows affected by this. I think that anything "used" by local farmers is a highly improbable cause.
