I found this post very interesting, Kevin. The initial post by Ed received, quite rightly, an outburst from all the members who contributed to the thread. However, the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust have had to rely on funding from the Countryside Alliance Foundation and the Shooting Times Woodcock Club (!!!) to employ a Ph. D. student to look into the wintering sites and breeding grounds of Woodcock. I am surprised that there appears to be no contribution from the RSPB to this project. There may well be a valid reason for this - does anyone know what it is?

I received a comprehensive Email from Richard Broughton at the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology explaining how Ph.D students were funded. Although the RSPB fund many Ph.D students, they did not in this case as it was already provided by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust. Thanks, Richard, for the information.
