Far Ings 3/11/08

A cold but bright few hours there 10.30am-2.30pm

No sign of the Smew today, lots of birders there and no - one could locate it?

1 Marsh Harrier (male, showed well on 4 occasions)
1 Kestrel
2 Bullfinch (m)
Lots Redwing/Fieldfare
1 GS Woodpecker (female, on the feeder at old VC, together with a host of Blue Tit, Great Tit, Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Tree Sparrows.)
1 Goldeneye (m)
1 Treecreeper
5 GC Grebe
4 Little Grebe
4 Song Thrush
1 Mistle Thrush
2 Willow Tit
12 LT Tit
1 Snipe

Presuming it is still there where exactly is the best spot to see the smew Mandy

Hi Chris. No one seemed able to locate it today. It has been sighted predominantly on the Hotel Lake. Yesterday it was showing well outside the Hotel Lake hide but more often than not it tended to hang out on the far side near the hotel, usually with the Goldeneye. Lets hope it is still around somewhere, there were a lot of disappointed birders who had hoped to see it today.

Am I right in presuming that the Hotel Lake Hide is the one down the muddy path (once upon a time good for bearded tits) that is close to the river bank hide

How long would it take to do Far Ings justice? With 8 hides, it looks like a big place!

8 hides 4 of which look at nothing and in summer you need to bring your own shears and strimmer to see out of the others so really not worth a visit honest

Even thou gpc"s found wonderful birds at barton,ive always found far ings a bore,gpc is right in all the points hes mentioned,dont know what it is but ive never liked barton much-dont know why,if i perservered with it more there maybe i might get a goodie,but so many times in those hides theres nowt to see.

Well iam afraid i will have to disagree, Barton is one of the best areas in Lincolnshire for birding and has got a rarity list as long as your arm,mainly thanks to a certain someone

.And i agree sitting in hides is boring Rog,but it has got me some excellant birds on Far-Ings,White winged-black Tern,Honey Buzzard,Spoonbill,Night Heron and Pom Skua to name but a few,but i do myself like to be outside,unless it is absolutely bucketing down,now that is when hides come into there own!
Agreed,the management work at Far-Ings is a little lax to say the least.
