RARE & SCARCE BIRDS ON DVD - 2008

Lincolnshire had an exceptional year in 2008 for unusual birds with the Cattle Egret and long-staying Glossy Ibis kicking things off in January/February. In August the Audouin's Gull in the Wolla Bank area generated tremendous interest - being a ‘first' for the county, but even this was to be outdone in the popularity stakes when the delightfully confiding Steppe Grey Shrike turned up at Grainthorpe Haven. If this was not enough a Desert Wheatear also performed superbly just down the road at Saltfleet Haven!

As well as the ‘star' county rarities the movie features many other good birds including Night Heron at Far Ings, Rose-coloured Starling at Mablethorpe, Broad-billed Sandpiper and Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Alkborough Flats, Red-necked Phalarope at Freiston Shore, Waxwings at Lincoln and Grey Phalarope at Covenham. In total the DVD's include footage of about thirty Lincs. rarities/scarcities.

Neighbouring Yorkshire also picked up a couple of outstanding rarities in 2008 with Brown Shrike at Flamborough and Amur Falcon at Tophill Low. The former was a first for mainland England whilst the falcon - misidentified as Red-Footed Falcon throughout its stay, was the first confirmed British record. Fortunately, I was on hand with the video camera for both of these!Yorkshire also attracted Black-bellied Dipper, two Woodchat Shrikes, Terek Sandpiper, Black Stork, Two-barred Crossbill and Pied Wheatear. Elsewhere, White-crowned Sparrow in Norfolk, Ross's Gull in Lancs., Green Heron in Kent, Trumpeter Finch in Norfolk, Red-footed Falcon in Derby's, and Sociable Plover on the Scilly Isles are all included.

In total over 65 sightings are featured in the 195 minutes of running time. I have held the price of the two-disc DVD set at £15.00 or £15.75 by first-class post.
