We have had a winter roost of Greenfinch from Dec'08 to the present(early March) of up to 90 birds. They roost in a laurel thicket(approx.70m lengthx2.5m depth)to the front of our house. The flock have a regular routine of continually circling the roosting area, spasmodically perching in nearby Birch trees and then dropping into the laurel stand in groups of 10/15 until roosting is complete. The flock is now decreasing with a roosting count of c.50 on 3.March. Although the Migration Atlas, published by T and AD Poyser states that winter 'site fidelity' does not appear to be strong, my counts displayed a remarkable roosting consistency between late-Dec./Feb. Have any LBC members had similar Greenfinch roosts? |

Is Carduelis chloris too mundane a bird to warrant a response? Richard.. |

I have not found a Greenfinch roost in this area since the late 1980's despite looking - they are ideal for ringing large numbers in a short space of time. From memory, it only lasted about a month but during that time we caught over 300 birds but only a handful were re-trapped. This tends to suggest a fairly transient population. |
