Gibraltar Point NNR
24 July 2010
Sunny at first but then overcast.
No sign of red-veined darters but lots of small red-eyed damselflies about (over 30 noted with most on Mill Pond).
Several emperors noted including ovipositing female with male hovering above.

Cheers
Brian

Good to meet you and the family Brian.
I forgot to mention that we have had 2 Brown Hawkers ovipositing on Mill Pond in the past few days - any comments from anybody on this as I wouldn't have expected a largely woodland Hawker to be colonising an exposed coastal site.

Hi Ed,

Brown Hawkers occur in a variety of habitats, from woodland ponds which are not too enclosed with foliage to reedy ditches and so is a fairly cosmopolitan breeding species wherever there is still, standing water. When maturing, they,as a lot of other species use woodland to hunt and rest up and at these times can be found well away from water. They also occur as migrants from the near continent,so this might also explain your sightings and would tie in with, what seems to be a very good year so far for Odonata migration.Just keep checking those Migrant Hawkers! :D .

Regards

Steve
