Amazingly Chris, Monica and Myself had a female Yellow-winged Darter in the sanctuary area of the Plantation at Gib Point on Thursday August 5th. Apologies for a late posting but communications problems between Chris and ourselves meant that we could only post today. And the basal quarter of the hind wings are really yellow. I reckon that's 19 species for Gib so far this year. |

Colin - we didn't, and couldn't, really believe what we were seeing. We couldn't remember how much yellow female Red-veined Darter ( or what maximum amounts Ruddy and Common ) shows so we went away and looked at a load of photos and then couldn't get back in contact with Chris. This individual really did have alot of mustard yellow on all wings but alot more on the hind pair completely covering the inner 1/4 - 1/3 of the wing. Otherwise at the time it looked Common Darterish but we're all inexperienced and learning. We didn't know what other characters to look for. Chris has just ( yesterday ) bought a very good camera so he'll be taking pictures from now on. He has some photos of the Red Veined Darters which I'm going to try and get him to post on the forum. Tony Burgess also has some good Gib Pt RV Darter pics which should be posted. If conditions are ok we'll be scouring the plantation today. Edmund |

Good find Ed, although i,m not spending much time looking at Rimac , its obvious how few darters and damsels there are this year, and no obvious reason , although as mentioned prevously it is the driest since 1994. Regards John. |
