The Lincolnshire Bird Club

The monthly task of reading water levels was livened up a bit when I found a tandem pair of Lesser Emperors with the female ovipositing allowing close prolonged views at 1.15pm today.

They are on Willow Walk from the only viewpoint which looks over Willow Lake, about 100 yards north from the Peter Prince hide. The viewpoint is accessed by 3 steps onto a flat area with a bench and an obvious short willow hurdle enclosing the site. The L Emperors favoured the dead branches and twigs on the right of the viewpoint and would settle at a distance of around 10 -15 feet.

I will try to be around for part of tomorrow but it is my day off! However, Phil Porter will be on duty to help guide folk and I will leave directions with the staff at the Visitor Centre but they are not experts so please don't ask them technical questions!

With thanks to Andy Sims for coming out at short notice and backing me up, (it helps keep the cynics at bay!) we watched the pair on and off until 3.00pm

This is obviously a first for Whisby Nature Reserve, but might it be a first for Lincs? I have only been in the county for 2 and a bit years so would welcome any info on previous records of L Emperor in the county.

just before returning home to watch the volleyball without the net, I had a female dragonfly at the end of Far Ings Road at Barton--instead of taking a pic when it landed I watched it and was baffled by its ID---plain brown thorax, green eyes and poorly patterned abdomen with very worn wings---although I have seen 1000's of Lesser Emperors in Cyprus most are males and females seldom get a second look but looking up this mystery dragon it would appear it could well have been a female LEmperor---further searches will be made---

Male Lesser Emperor still present at Whisby Sunday morning but ranging widely over west side of Willow lake. Female not seen.

Male Lesser Emperor in front of the viewpoint as mentioned above at 4pm today (Sunday 2 July). Many thanks to Phil Porter for letting me know (as I was at Whisby anyway). A smart looking dragonfly with the blue abdomen section very obvious at distance.
