Post subject:  Another Lesser Emperor?

In a rather strange run of events Adrian Royston the Whisby Education Centre Manager handed me a dead Dragonfly he picked up yesterday (Monday) outside the Education Centre. I’m about 90% sure it’s a female Lesser Emperor!! If so, it must surely be the third record for Whisby (and Lincs?) in 4 days! Odonata when dead lose their colour rapidly thus creating problems, but I can confirm the presence of a yellow band at the base of the second abdominal segment. In addition the eyes still show a greenish hue and the thorax is an unmarked brown. I have only been able to access Askew since returning home (no copy at work) and note that two small black tubercular callosities behind the occiput would appear to be diagnostic in female L Emperor. I’ll check this out tomorrow, so watch this space!

The male Lesser Emperor was still present today (Tuesday), viewable from the Willow Lake viewpoint (per Peter Haywood).

I feel that these records may be tied in with the recent arrival of Red-veined Darters, and there are certainly at least half a dozen or so L Emperors elsewhere in England at the moment. Any serious Odonatist would be advised to check their local patch. You never know what’s lurking out there!

The dead Dragonfly picked up near to Whisby Education Centre on Monday has now been confirmed as a female Lesser Emperor, the third record for Whisby and also (I assume) Lincs.

Anybody wishing to see it can call in to the Wardens workshop where I would be happy to show it to any interested parties.

Regards

Grahame
