Afternoon visit to heathland re-creation areas, as a dry run to the likely wet field visit I'll be leading there tomorrow for the British Dragonfly Society. Eight species recorded as follows: Migrant Hawker At least 200 swarming around plantation edges and rides. Probably the most I've ever seen in a relatively small area. Southern Hawker 1 Common Hawker 1 Common Darter 30 Black darter 2 Emerald Damselfly 10 Blue-tailed Damselfly 1 Common Blue Damselfly 1 Cheers Brian |

there were certainly an aweful lot of mixtas in limited areas of the heath today: I counted 19 on one small birch no more than 1.5m high but elswhere they were very thin on the ground--- the heathland recreation is not open to the public should anyone ask directions |

Only addition to the above list during the walk today (19 August) was ruddy darter (at least 10 males). Migrant Hawkers seemingly less common today but similar weather conditions. As Graeme states the heathland recreation area is not open to the public (permit required from Forestty Commision). Cheers Brian |
