As the title says, it's my 31st birthday next week.

To celebrate, I would love to spend the whole day birdwatching at some new sites. I've been to Frampton Marsh, Freiston Shore, Titchwell Marsh, Cley Marshes, Welney (briefly), Snipe Dales, Westgate Wood and Witham Way Country Park.

Naturally, my birthday birdwatching would be made better by one or more new life ticks to add to the list, as well as continuing to appreciate birds I've already listed.

The new locations have a few caveats. Firstly, the location must be easily accessible by road (Dad will be driving), able to be done justice in a few hours, preferably a hide, be obviously somewhere I haven't been before and with as high a chance as is realistic to provide one or a few lifers and be free of, or have a very low probability of encountering, snakes.

On my list of possibilities are:

RSPB Bempton Cliffs
Spurn Point
RSPB Old Moor
Gibraltar Point (providing there's a snake-free path through the reserve)
WWT Welney (for a more thorough look round)
Marston Sewage Works
RSPB Ouse Washes
Lakenheath Fen
Ferry Meadows Country Park, Peterborough
RSPB Snettisham
Any along the south bank of the Humber
RSPB Fairburn Ings, near Castleford

Or any place that you think I might have overlooked. These places can be a decent drive away or local.

Any ideas? :? :?:

I'm sure the other guys and gals can throw you a few more.

Blacktoft Sands - RSPB reserve near Goole -about six of seven hides - a long drive for you

Rutland Water - not that far from you - about 15 hides - you can certainly spend a day there - there is a fee to pay - well worth a visit - perhaps it is likely that the Ospreys may have now gone

Gibraltat Point - anything can turn up at this time of the year - never seen a snake there

Bempton Cliffs/Flamborough Head near Bridlington - not sure if this is the best time to go but you should go in summer for close up views of Puffin, Gannets, Guillemots, Razorbill & Fulmar

Spurn Head - a magical bird watching mecca on the right day - you just need for the wind to be coming down from Scandanavia - a full day and a great location even without the birds - three hides - one for sea watching but you should be walking in this location

Kirkby on Bain - one hide - and then Ostlers Plantation/Moor Farm/Kirkby Moor - all close by

Chatsworth House/Carsington Water in Derbyshire combined with the Peak District

If the wind is blowing from the East you should stick to the east coast

Hi Katherine, to get maximum benefit of a round trip, would suggest the following route.

Starting at Black Toft (Ousefleet ) then back round Gunness and up to Alkborough, then continue round the coast to Chowder Ness, Far Ings etc. then to finish you are not far from the raptors and
Owls at Worlaby Carrs.

Good Luck and Happy Birthday, Mike Surr

North Cave across the Humber - good area with decent hides
Potteric Carr near Doncaster - large reserve with about 14 hides ( good in winter for Bittern, Water rail, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker )
and our favourite Messingham Sand Quarry but only 2 hides

Are you going to let everyone know your choice before you go?

Brain wracked by indecision - weather is not looking very good either....

Do I play it safe with the North Norfolk coast, or do I head north to the Humber?

AAAAAGGGHHH!!!!!! :? :? :? :? :?

Advice please?

The forecast for Spurn is dull but dry with an easterly wind, what more do you need.
I would check out the Spurn website.
http://www.spurnbirdobservatory.co.uk.
for the daily log to see what you want.
I have been there several times, and on it's day it can be the best birdwatching in Britain, give it a try.
