Tufted Duck - 2 + 5 juv
Kingfisher - 1
Common Tern - 3
Mallard - 28
Shelduck - 1 j
LBB - 1
Kestrel - 1
Marsh Harrier
Oyk - 2
Greylag - 119
Moorhen - 7 incl juvs
Long-tailed Tit - 1
Song Thrush - 1 usual place singing away as we left.
Avocet
GSW - 1
Green Woodpecker - 1
Coot - 66
Great-crested Grebe - 3 incl juv
Black-headed Gull - 89 [ view reduced by long grass in front of Wader Hide]

A few hours on site between the showers produced:

2 Green Woodpecker
1 juv. Marsh Harrier
1 Common Sandpiper
8 Common Crossbill(Over,south west).

Another visit today in much better weather resulted in a few more noteworthy sightings:

20 Common Crossbill(Over,south west),makes me wonder if birds are commuting between Twigmoor and Laughton,as this is the third occasion in three visits i have observed birds doing this.
1 Green Sandpiper
1 Greenshank
2 Turtle Dove
1 Juv. Marsh Harrier
2 juv. Green Woodpecker

A visit today while dodging showers produced the following notable sightings:

1 Green Sandpiper
32 Black-tailed Godwit(South over the main lake)
2 juv. Green Woodpecker

Post subject:  lack of birds very worrying!!!
A visit to msq produced nothing of interest in birding terms,no waders no raptors,just a couple of very distant buzzrds,loads of butterflys,i was tripping over them,i have to say,birding has gone down the tubes in the last ten years,the lack of birds is quite frankly dissappointing,worrying to say the least.
let me give a few examples
in spring and autumn/waders;
greenshank was not common but fairly regular-not anymore,lucky to get one
sanderling about the same
curlew sandpiper similair
common and green sandpipers getting rarer by the minute/curlew sandpipiers often turned up not anymore,turnstones well down,
artic terns-forget it!!!used to be regular!!!
grasshopper warbler-one or two every year-not anymore!!
bearded tits,some every year-not anymore!!
temminks stint,little stint,uncommen but found ocassionaly/but mega rare now!!
nightingale-forget it!-used to get them,
hobby not as mamny sightings even osprey sightings are down,thou i did get one there this year briefly
ive most probably left out others i cannot think of right now,sorry to spin a tale of woe,but these are the facts,hirundines ,each year the numbers are dropping at msq,.
no body on this site has mentioned the obvious decline in birds,it rather surprises me
the rspb is doing a wonderful job,if you are not a member ,please join and hopefully the above issues can be reversed intime

Stop moaning! Nothing stays the same unfortunately that's what life is all about.

What has the RSPB got to do with MSQ or am I missing summat, shouldn't you be advising people to join the LWT instead? At least you finished on a positive note!

Another site near me used to have lots of waders etc incluing Temmincks but in recent years they have declined it's the way of the world. We have to live with it.

Wow, I don't think the RSPB is that powerful Roger !! You're absolutely right about bird numbers, I have never known things so lean but we don't live on an inert plastic world, it's constantly changing and I don't think it has a great lot to do with human activity either.
Looking back over 1000's of years, ice ages have come and gone and so it goes on, not something the RSPB can influence methinks.
We lose some birds we gain others, frankly it was far more interesting 35/40 years ago, today I can't believe some of the reported sightings on here; "Spotted Flycatcher seen..." they used to be all over the place but then again, there are so many little egrets about now they hardly merit a mention.

I still look foreward to the autumn migration but some years even that is dire but, this year it will be great, (wont it). :roll:

Wed be inn a bad way without em,ospreys,marsh harriers,hen,less waders than even now etc etc/JT Goy-IF YOU READ MY ARTICLE PROPERLY-Youd have seen i said"im dissapointed and WORRIED BY THE SITUATION",
this does not constitute as moaning,why is it after i wrote this article i had a strong feeling youd come on and say that-just to score some cheap points without foundation,!!john im stating facts,the rspb has got a lot to do with what you are seeing at msq ,so think before you dribble out a load of trivial illogical rubbish which seems to be your staple diet!!,if you were to read colins response after yours youd get an idea what a sensible response to a sensible submission should :roll: be!!!

For gods sake i am trying to get a reasoned debate on what i think is a reasonable valid subject!!.
I think the subject ive presented to this forum is of a serious birding topic,based on observations made or as pointed out not made -as the case may be-within the last 10-15 years,i was after reasonable debate,,,........but what do i get slagged off.Quote"stop moaning" etc etc,
there"s no wonder a rival forum was set up to this,if people cant conduct a sensible debate on a sensible topic then its getting to be a sorry state of affairs.,and thats all im saying on the matter as a valid important topic on here seems to be wasted on this forum.(yes im indignant!! :x :x :x )

Great news! All's well that ends well, as they say. :D John and Roger should now meet up and smoke the great hookah pipe of peace - but not at MSQ. I would suggest somewhere out of the wind, eg. in front of the hide at the Visitor Centre at Far Ings - hookah pipes should be readily available in nearby Barton on Humber. Perhaps Graham could be persuaded to take a commemorative photograph of the occasion to be posted on the web. Then we could all join you both for a celebratory fry-up in the Car Park : nothing to do with wildlife/birds, I know, but we would only be following a (most welcome) precedent .......and, anyway, there's not a lot about at the moment.
