Post subject: | Night-hunting Peregrines |
It is reasonable well known that Peregrines may hunt at night, but this has now been excellently captured by the Derby Cathedral Peregrine team recently and posted on their web-site today (see http://derbyperegrines.blogspot.com/ ). Warning......it is not for the faint-hearted as the video shows a Woodcock being dispatched. Adult female Peregrine was seen to fly off in the dark and return minutes later with a Woodcock, which although she promptly killed, she left it for several days before eating it (perhaps they like their gamebirds hung to get more flavour!!). The video is in infra-red, it would have been virtually pitch black for the Peregrine. Earlier on the same night she took a Snipe, but accidentally dropped it into the nest site, where it 'recovered' several hours later and flew off, only to be pursued again!! Alan |
