Post subject:  Night-hunting Peregrines

It is reasonable well known that Peregrines may hunt at night, but this has now been excellently captured by the Derby Cathedral Peregrine team recently and posted on their web-site today (see http://derbyperegrines.blogspot.com/ ). Warning......it is not for the faint-hearted as the video shows a Woodcock being dispatched.
Adult female Peregrine was seen to fly off in the dark and return minutes later with a Woodcock, which although she promptly killed, she left it for several days before eating it (perhaps they like their gamebirds hung to get more flavour!!). The video is in infra-red, it would have been virtually pitch black for the Peregrine.
Earlier on the same night she took a Snipe, but accidentally dropped it into the nest site, where it 'recovered' several hours later and flew off, only to be pursued again!!
